The Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference met on March 5, 2015. Chair McCullough called the meeting to order at 8:03 a.m.
Justice Kapsner moved that the minutes of the November 24, 2014 meeting be approved. Seconded by Judge Romanick. The motion carried and the minutes were approved.
Chair McCullough advised the committee that the purpose of the meeting was to determine the date and time of the June Judicial Conference. He reviewed the tentative agenda received from the State Bar Association and then called on Lee Ann Barnhardt to discuss the issues related to timing of our conference and length of time available. Ms. Barnhardt explained that the length of time allowed for educational purposes is critical in determining the type of education offered while also keeping in mind that we do not want to pull judges out of SBAND sessions they may want to attend. Justice Kapsner said she would like to see more education offered at the June conferences but was less concerned about it this year since the court will be offering the Judicial Institute in May.
Following discussion, Judge Romanick moved that the date, time and location of the June Judicial Conference be set in downtown Bismarck, on June 18, 2015, starting at 10:15 a.m. and ending at 11:45 a.m. Seconded by Judge Haskell. The motion carried. It was determined that the business meeting could be conducted in 15-20 minutes since the legislative update will be done at Judicial Institute in May.
Ms. Barnhardt then reviewed a list of potential topics for the educational session. Judge Romanick moved that the Committee authorize Lee Ann Barnhardt to develop an educational agenda for the conference based on the either the judge’s role in jury selection or asset evaluation. Seconded by Judge Haskell. The motion Carried.
There being no further business to come before the committee, the chair called for a motion to adjourn. Judge Romanick moved for adjournment. Seconded by Judge Haskell. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned the meeting at 8:26 a.m.
Respectfully submitted, Sally Holewa Executive Secretary to the Judicial Conference
