The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court and Supreme Court are courts of record, having civil and criminal jurisdiction over all causes of action subject to tribal jurisdiction by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, under contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the United States Department of the Interior.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is soliciting applications for two positions of Associate Justice of the Standing Rock Supreme Court
The Standing Rock Supreme Court hears all appeals from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court, criminal, civil and juvenile, and convenes at Ft. Yates, North Dakota four times a year. Present volume of appeals at each sitting may be heard in one court day.
The Justices of the Supreme Court are Constitutional Officers of the Tribe, subject to ratification by two-thirds of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council at the first meeting of Council following appointment and subject to a retention vote by a majority of the voters in the next regular tribal election thereafter. Upon retention, the Justices consecutive serve four year terms, thereafter, subject to retention votes at the end of each term. Except for non-retention by the voters, no judge or justice of the Tribe may be removed from office except by conviction by two-thirds of the Council of charges of specific misconduct in office or for medical inability to carry out the duties of the office, also determined by two-thirds of the Council. Compensation may not be reduced during term of office.
Minimun statutory requirements::
Selection shall be subject to interview by the Judicial Committee of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council. Application may be in any format. A resume' of professional experience including professional references and copies of law school transcript and of one or more writing samples, researched and written by the applicant, shall accompany the application. If the applicant has ever been subject to professional disciplinary action or sued for professional malpractice, the Application shall include full particulars.
