Executive Committee Present: Absent: Staff: Chair Dale V. Sandstrom called the meeting to order at 10:10 a.m. Chair Standstrom asked about Kirk Smith who retired on January 1, 2001. Keithe Nelson stated he was unable to contact him. Chair Sandstrom asked Keithe Nelson to make every attempt to contact him in the future. Chair Sandstrom announced appointments made after the last meeting with consultation by email: Pattern Jury Instruction Committee Judge John Greenwood Legislative Committee Judge Gail Hagerty, Chair Chair Sandstrom announced that Judge Zane Anderson and Judge Ronald Goodman indicated a willingness to be on the Judicial Education Commission. Judge Robert Wefald moved they be appointed. Justice Mary Muehlen Maring seconded the motion. Carried with Judge Goodman abstaining. Chair Sandstrom stated he e-mailed the judges asking for education topics for the summer Judicial Conference held in conjunction with the SBAND annual meeting. The available time is 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2001. After lunch there is time for a legislative update by Jim Ganje and a short business meeting before the General Assembly and the State of the Judiciary Address. SBAND is arranging a Friday morning session that will be of interest to judges. Possible Thursday topics are Dick Elefson, an addiction counselor on drug, alcohol and gambling addiction as a focus. A second possibility is judicial planning using the NDSU Group Decision Center and their computers. A third possible topic was suggested by Judge Bruce Bohlman on probate and guardianships. Chair Sandstrom suggested discussion be deferred until the next meeting because additional suggestions from judges are expected. The meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
