Louie Hentzen called the meeting to order. New members joining the commission are Justice Mary Muehlen Maring, Dean Paul LeBel, Judge Ron Hilden, and Judge Sonna Anderson. Members leaving the commission are Judge Don Jorgensen, Judge Bill McLees, Professor Candace Zierdt, and Justice Carol Ronning Kapsner.
Louie Hentzen explained that Rule 36 requires the commission to designate a chair. A motion to elect Justice Maring as chair of the commission was made by Shawn Peterson and seconded by Judge Severin. Motion carried. Chair Justice Maring called for a motion to approve the Minutes of November 22, 2004. A motion to approve the Minutes of November 22, 2004 was made by Jean Carrier and seconded by Judge Irby. Motion carried.
The commission discussed having a subcommittee approve of the continuing education credits or whether the commission should approve the credits at their meetings. A motion to have a subcommittee consisting of three members approve all continuing education credits requests was made by Jean Carrier. Shawn Peterson seconded the motion and the motion was approved. Chair Maring asked for volunteers. Jean Carrier, Judge Severin, and Judge Irby agreed to be members of the subcommittee. Jean Carrier will chair the subcommittee. The subcommittee members will approve continuing education credits and if there is a question, it will be brought to the commission for approval.
Justice Maring stated that she had a continuing judicial education request from Judge Medd. Judge Severin made a motion to approve the request and for Justice Maring to sign the request. Dean LeBel seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
Justice Maring went over the agenda for the Judicial Institute. Judge Jorgensen has contacted the presenters. He would like to have a host judge for each presenter. Judge Jorgensen will contact the judges. Justice Maring felt that at the social and dinner on Tuesday night of the Judicial Institute there should be some recognition to Judge Bohlman. The Judicial Institute is scheduled for three full days in May.
The commission discussed future dates for meetings. The commission agreed to meet on a quarterly basis. Justice Maring will send out the dates for future meetings
Justice Maring brought to the groups attention that a policy change will need to take place to amend the policy on self-study credits. The commission will discuss amending the policy at the next meeting
Judge Hilden made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Jean Carrier seconded. Motion carried.
