TWELVE ATTORNEYS APPLY FOR MESCHKE POSITION
Twelve candidates will vie for Supreme Court Herbert L. Meschke's position as a justice on the North Dakota Supreme Court. Justice Meschke will retire on October 1 of this year after 13 years of service to the State as a Supreme Court justice.
The applicants are:

Carol Ronning Kapsner (Bismarck)
Wayne Stenehjem (Grand Forks)
Judge Lee Christofferson (Devils Lake)
Peter Halbach (Devils Lake)
Mark Stenehjem (Williston)
Jeffery Leadbetter (Lisbon)
Gerald Galloway (Dickinson)
James Wold (Luverne)
Craig Campbell (Fargo)
Judge Allan Schmalenberger (Dickinson)
Interviews of the applicants will begin at 9:00 am on September 10 at the Doublewood Inn in Bismarck, and will run through the afternoon on September 11.
Judicial Nominating Committee Secretary, Sandi Tabor, indicated interest in the position was high with 22 individuals requesting applications. Tabor noted, "When former Justice Beryl Levine left the court in 1996, 15 individuals requested applications and 10 were returned to the committee. The response this time is slightly higher and we are pleased." Committee Chair, John T. Korsmo,is also pleased with the response. "The list includes some exceptional individuals, and overall I am pleased with the quality of the applicants," stated Korsmo.
The Judicial Nominating Committee is charged with conducting interviews and evaluating the qualifications of individuals interested in being appointed to the bench. The committee was created as part of the major revision to the State's Constitution in 1976. The statute defining the specific duties of the Committee was approved by the Legislature in 1981.
