District Judge John Greenwood has announced his retirement effective August 1. He has served as a judge in the Southeast Judicial District since 1999.
Greenwood announced his retirement in a letter to Governor Doug Burgum.
"It has been my honor and privilege to serve the citizens of the Southeast Judicial District and the State of North Dakota as District Judge since 1999," Greenwood wrote.
Under N.D.C.C. § 27-05-02.1, the Supreme Court is required by law to determine if the judgeship should be retained, moved, or eliminated. It would be filled by appointment.
Greenwood was appointed district judge in 1999 and elected in 2002, 2006 and 2012.
Greenwood was in private legal practice in Jamestown from 1975-1993. He served as Stutsman County State's Attorney from 1993-99. He is a 1975 graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law.
