Chief Assistant State's Attorney

Salary Range: negotiable, dependent on experience
Potential Longevity Bonus: $6,000

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a juris doctorate degree, a North Dakota license to practice law at the time of hire, and at least three years related experience at the time of hire. Knowledge of effectively working with the legal process, rules, various types of clients, and related governmental and court officials, the public; and use of computer software. Ongoing education is required. Applicants will be subject to a post offer criminal background check.

The County will consider under filling, if no applicant satisfying the minimum qualifications is available for hire.

Essential Position Tasks

Provide legal services in various court actions. Prepare files for court proceedings and hearings. Present evidence and arguments in various levels of court system.

Work with experts in case review. Coordinate multi-issue and complicated caseload. Advise assistant state's attorney as needed. May be assigned specialized case load or subject areas.

Review criminal investigations, charge violations of law, meet and interview witnesses, identify need for subpoenas, coordinate with law enforcement personnel, and work with defense attorneys. Negotiate with parties. Handle jury trials, bench trials, appeals, and other court proceedings.

Prepare and type memos, motions, and legal briefs. Calculate restitution figures for crime victims. Assist in training assistant state's attorney. Participate in hiring.

In absence of state's attorney, provide back up to that position. Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
