Temporary Investigator
Office of Disciplinary Counsel, Bismarck, ND

This is planned to be a long-term temporary position working approximately 20 hours per week. The position is eligible to be extended every biennium based on funding.

Salary & Benefits:
$2,000 per month; 20 hours per week. This position is not eligible for state benefits paid for by the North Dakota Court System. Temporary employees are eligible to participate in the retirement and life insurance programs at the employee’s expense.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Requires a two-year college degree.  Preference given to persons with paralegal, criminal justice, or similar equivalent degrees.  Preference also given to persons with legal office experience and/or criminal justice experience.

Summary of Work:
The Investigator will be responsible for investigation allegations of ethical misconduct by lawyers.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
1. Interviews complainants, respondent attorneys, and any witnesses.

2. Performs legal research and conducts legal analysis for review by an attorney.

3. Prepares draft investigative reports, memorandums of interviews, legal documents, letters, and other correspondence for review by attorneys.

4. Uses communication skills to effectively deal with various personalities and issues arising from complaints.

5. Organizes and prioritizes work.

6. Meets deadlines.

7. Maintains files and calendars.

8. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Disciplinary Counsel.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
2. Ability to conduct legal research and analysis of complex legal issues which will be reviewed by an attorney
3. Excellent time management and organization skills.
4. The judgment, reliability, and willingness to devote the time and energy necessary to conduct complete investigations.
5. Knowledge and skills in the use of computers for preparing letters, legal documents, reports, memorandums, data entry, and other correspondence and forms. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
6. Requires high degree of confidentiality, and a high degree of communication skills to deal with complainants, respondent attorneys, potential witnesses, and the general public.
