Ten North Dakota attorneys are representing the state at the annual Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws this week in Tucson, Arizona.
The conference is considering proposed uniform laws in areas such as commercial law, securities law, probate law and tort law.
The purpose of the conference is to promote uniformity in state law on subjects where uniformity is desirable and practicable. It was organized in 1892 to promote uniformity by voluntary action of state governments. Since its organization, the conference has drafted hundreds of uniform laws. Many, like the Uniform Commercial Code, have been universally or nearly universally enacted.
North Dakota commissioners include Owen L. Anderson, Jay Buringrud, Gail Hagerty, David Hogue, Frank Jestrab, Rep. Lawrence Klemin, Rep. William Kretschmar, Sen. Tom Trenbeath, Michael Unhjem and Candace Zierdt.
Trenbeath and Zierdt are attending the conference as commissioners for the first time this year, while Anderson and Unhjem will join Jestrab as life members of the conference. Commissioners can be elected to life membership after being members of the conference for 20 years.
