Gov. John Hoeven today appointed Minot lawyer Todd L. Cresap, 48, to the new District Judgeship in the Northwest Judicial District, chambered in Minot, effective January 1, 2010.
Hoeven made the announcement at a news conference at the Ward County Courthouse Monday.
The other finalists were Minot lawyer William Bergman and Assistant Ward County State's Attorney Kelly Dillon. The 2009 North Dakota legislature created new judgeships in the Northwest and Southeast Judicial Districts.
Cresap is a Valley City native who has lived in Minot for many years. He received a Bachelor's degree in economics from Minot State College in 1983, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1986.
Judge-designate Cresap has practiced law in Minot for 23 years, handling a wide variety of cases. In recent years, a large portion of his practice has been family law and representation of defendants in the state juvenile court system. He is currently the defense attorney for Minot's Juvenile Drug Court. He previously practiced law with Gary Lee,Michael Sturdevant, Douglas Mattson, and Richard Hagar, all of whom are now district judges.
Cresap is past president of the Ward County Bar Association and is an adjunct business law instructor for Minot State University. He is active in the community and serves as legal counsel for the International Music Camp and the Minot Junior Golf Association.
Cresap's wife Linda is Dean of the Graduate School and Research and Sponsored Programs at Minot State. They have three children.
