If you hadn't become a lawyer or a judge, what career would you have pursued?
After I graduated from college, I was debating whether to go on to graduate school in psychology or law school. A friend who had just completed the first year of law school helped convince me that law school was the way to go. Otherwise, I probably would have gone on to something in psychology and maybe have become a clinical psychologist.

How did you happen to become a judge?
Our local multi-county judge (F. Gene Gruber) announced he would not be seeking re-election. Some of the area county commissioners helped persuade me to run.

What do you most like about your job?
Every once in a while (not often enough) I think that what I did or my decision may actually have made a difference and was the right thing. I like to hope that as a judge I can be a positive force in society.

What are some things most people don't know about you?
Most people probably don't know that my wife is a dentist with a full time practice. We have three children, so balancing two careers and family can be demanding at times.

What do you like to do with your spare time?
I like any sporting activity-running, basketball, golf, etc. My children are at the age where I also like to watch them in their activities.
