How did you happen to become a judge?
In 1982, I was practicing law in New Rockford, where I was Municipal Judge and assistant Eddy County Justice. The state was changing to a full-time County Judge system in all counties. That year, I was elected County Judge for Benson, Eddy, Foster, and Wells counties.
What do you most like about your job?
The opportunity to serve the people of North Dakota in a position where I can help resolve conflict and hopefully make a positive impact and difference.
What are some things most people don't know about you?
1) I taught math and social studies and coached basketball and football in Proctor, Minn., and Grand Forks, N.D., for four years before going to law school.
2) My Dad, Ralph Bekken, and I were both elected County Judges in 1982. As far as I am aware, we are the only father and son ever to sit as full-time trial judges at the same time in North Dakota.
What do you like to do with your spare time?
I like to spend time with my family, travel, read, watch sporting events, golf, walk, and Kiwanis service.
