Eleven lawyers, including three judges, have applied to fill the Supreme Court vacancy that will be created when Justice Carol Kapsner resigns effective July 31.

Once the Judicial Nominating Committee has interviewed the applicants and made its recommendations to Governor Doug Burgum, by law he will have thirty days to make a selection from the list of nominees, ask for another list, or call an election.
Under Article 6, § 13, of the North Dakota Constitution, the person appointed "shall continue in the position until the next general election immediately following the service of at least two years."
