The Judicial Nominating Committee is seeking applicants to fill the vacancy on the North Dakota Supreme Court created by the resignation of Justice William Neumann.
Neumann, who now serves as secretary to the Judicial Nominating Committee, sent a letter to State Bar Association of North Dakota members April 7, calling for candidates to apply.
Applications may be obtained from Neumann at the SBAND office ((701)255-1404; Bill@sband.org).
Completed applications must be received in the SBAND office by 5:00 p.m., April 22, to be considered by the Committee.
Interviews are tentatively scheduled to be held the week of May 30 in Bismarck. Prior to the interviews, SBAND will be conducting a statewide survey evaluating the applicants.
Once the Committee has completed the interview process and has made its recommendations to Governor John Hoeven, he will have 30 days to make a selection from the list of nominees.
N.D. Const. Art. 6, § 13, and Chapter 27-25 N.D.C.C., set out the legal requirements for the judge selection process. The judgeship will retain Neumann's unexpired term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2012. Under the constitutional amendment adopted in 1998, a person appointed to the judgeship would continue to serve until the 2008 general election, with the person elected in 2008 serving the remainder of the term.
