Lawrence (Larry) Klemin has practiced law in Bismarck for 35 years and is a lawyer with Schweigert, Klemin & McBride, P.C.
Klemin received a BA degree in English and Russian from UND in 1967 and a Juris Doctor with Distinction from the UND School of Law in 1978.
Prior to entering law school, Klemin was in the U.S. Army for 3 years and then spent 5 years as an unemployment insurance appeals referee for the State of North Dakota, where he held several thousand hearings.
Klemin has practiced law primarily as a civil trial lawyer, with experience in over 100 civil trials in state and federal courts and more than two thousand civil litigation case files. He has also had an active office practice in real estate, business, and insurance law.
Klemin is the author of Civil Practice of North Dakota 2d (3 volumes) and CPND2d Trial Notebook, which have been widely distributed to public and private libraries in North Dakota and elsewhere in the United States. He is also the author of Small-Case Litigation Forms, distributed nationally by James Publishing.
Klemin has been a State Representative in the North Dakota Legislative Assembly for 15 years, and has been the sponsor of hundreds of bills. He is Vice Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and has been the Chairman of several interim legislative committees. He has been appointed to serve on numerous legislative committees and commissions on judicial process and procedure, civil law, criminal law, and domestic relations law.
Klemin is also a Commissioner on the National Uniform Law Commission and has served on numerous uniform law study and drafting committees. He is a past Chairman of the SBAND Administrative Law Committee and has also served on several other SBAND and legislative taskforces.
Klemin has been an active community leader and has served on the boards of many organizations, including the West Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross (past Chairman), North Dakota Chapter of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation (past Volunteer of the Year), Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce (past Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee), RSVP North Dakota, and on the Parish Council of the Church of Corpus Christi (past Chairman).
Klemin is a Vietnam veteran and served as an infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and other military service awards.
Larry Klemin is married to Rita Klemin, a former elementary school principal with the Bismarck Public Schools. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
Klemin has had a wide range of experience in his law practice, in the Legislature, in businesses that he founded, in civic and professional organizations, and in his personal life. He will bring a diverse and comprehensive background, substantial practical experience, and significant legal experience to the North Dakota Supreme Court.
