Corey is the son of attorney Amanda Corey of Grand Forks. Earlier in the day, Chief Justice McEvers also served on a panel discussion at Girls State.

North Dakota Boys State and Girls State are leadership and civics programs sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary that give high school juniors a hands-on look at government. Rather than simply learning about civics in the classroom, participants experience it firsthand by running for office, holding elections, writing laws, and serving in simulated city, county, and state government while developing leadership and citizenship skills.

The Educator Experience is a four-day program that places local middle and high school educators in experiential learning sessions with area employers. The goal is to expose teachers to the career opportunities available in the Bismarck-Mandan region so they can bring that knowledge back to their students.

As part of our "Introduction to Civic Leadership" day, educators had the opportunity to learn firsthand from Justice Douglas Bahr about the role of the judicial branch in state government and the importance of an independent court system. Participants gained valuable insight into how cases move through the courts, the responsibilities of the North Dakota Supreme Court, and the impact judicial decisions have on communities across our state.

The visit provided a unique behind-the-scenes look at the courtroom and encouraged meaningful discussion about civic engagement, government processes, and the real-world connections educators can bring back to their classrooms. Experiences like this help bridge the gap between education and community leadership while giving teachers a deeper understanding of the institutions that shape North Dakota.

Since its founding, the court has provided individuals struggling with substance use disorders an opportunity to rebuild their lives through treatment, supervision, and rehabilitation rather than incarceration alone. The celebration included recognition of the hard work required to complete the program, words of encouragement from people who started the program and stories of changed lives from past graduates.

Over the past quarter century, the program has served 561 participants, helping hundreds of individuals address addiction and move toward long-term recovery. Of those participants, 327 have successfully graduated from the program, marking a significant achievement for both the individuals involved and the broader community.

The Adult Treatment Court combines intensive treatment services, regular court appearances, drug testing, and community support to help participants achieve sobriety and reduce repeat offenses. Its success over the last 25 years reflects the dedication of judges, treatment providers, probation officers, law enforcement, and community partners who work together to support recovery and public safety.

As the program celebrates its 25th anniversary, court officials and supporters continue to recognize the positive impact the Bismarck Adult Treatment Court has had on participants, families, and the community as a whole.

The students, who are currently developing English proficiency at a beginning level, participated in the visit as part of an effort to extend learning beyond the classroom and into the community. The experience was designed to support both academic content and language development through real-world engagement.

During their visit to the Supreme Court, students observed the courtroom and learned about the role of the judiciary in North Dakota’s government. The setting provided opportunities to connect visual learning with emerging vocabulary, while also encouraging listening and speaking in an authentic environment.

The visit was part of a broader educational initiative that includes exploring key state institutions such as the North Dakota Heritage Center and the State Capitol. These experiences aim to help students build background knowledge, strengthen communication skills, and deepen their understanding of cultural and historical concepts.

Educators emphasized the importance of interactive, accessible learning opportunities for English learners. Visits like this one allow students to engage directly with civic institutions while practicing language skills in meaningful contexts.

Court System Releases 2025 Juvenile Annual Report

The North Dakota Court System has released the 2025 Juvenile Court Annual Report, highlighting statewide trends and ongoing efforts to improve outcomes for youth and families through accountability, rehabilitation, and community-based interventions.
