Gov. Burgum proclaims May as Drug Court Month

North Dakota's drug courts join nearly 4,000 drug courts nationwide in celebrating Drug Court Month. Drug courts are now the most successful justice program for reducing addiction, crime, and recidivism while saving taxpayer dollars. North Dakota’s drug court graduates entered the program addicted to drugs and often facing incarceration, but because of the combination of accountability and treatment they received in drug court, they are now going back to school, reuniting with their families, finding employment, and paying taxes.

North Dakota has six juvenile drug courts and seven adult drug courts. The first courts opened their doors in May 2000 in Fargo and Grand Forks and were juvenile drug courts. Drug courts help keep our roads safe from drunk drivers, intervene before our youth embark on debilitating life of drug abuse and crime, and give the participants the tools they need to stay clean.

It is this time of the year when our drug courts thank all the local businesses for their support and donations to our courts and out state legislators and Governor Burgum for their continued financial support.

Retirement celebration for court reporter Gillig to be held May 20

Jane Gillig, the senior court reporter in the South Central Judicial District, is retiring after more than 26 years of service. She will be honored at a retirement celebration Thursday, May 20, at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan. The event will be held in Courtroom 305 beginning at 11 a.m.

Gillig worked 26 years with Judge Tom Schneider until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2020. She currently works with Judge Bonnie Storbakken.

"She was an exceptional reporter and is a wonderful person and dedicated state employee," said SCJD Judge James Hill.

County courthouses limiting access to the public

Feb. 8: The Dickey County Courthouse doors are locked due to a basement renovation and courthouse security. There is a new intercom system to let the public into the building. The intercom in the foyer has a camera on it and when the public pushes a button corresponding to the office they want to visit, a tablet will be used to unlock the doors.

Jan. 6: The Grand Forks County Courthouse remains closed to the public. Entrance is by appointment only. The county commission has approved reopening effective Monday, April 12, 2021.

Jan. 5: The Steele County courthouse is closed to the public. Appointments need to be made by phone.

Nov. 24: The Traill County courthouse is locked to the public but people may call and be screened to come in.
