Supreme Court visits UND School of Law

The Supreme Court visited the UND School of Law on Oct. 30-31 to hear oral arguments, judge the moot court competition, and meet with students.

The Court heard arguments in State v. Legare on Oct. 30. Kiara Kraus-Parr represented the appellant.

Josh Frey argued on behalf of the state in the Legare case.

Paul Emerson also represented the state in Legare.

First and second year law students listen to the arguments in Legare.

Students and teachers from Central Valley High School also attended the arguments.

The Court listened intently to the arguments.

The Court also heard arguments in Minn-Kota Ag Products, Inc. v. N.D. PSC, et al. Loren Hanson argued for Minn-Kota.

Zachary Pelham represented the Public Service Commission.

Kim Radermacher appeared on behalf of Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative.

After the arguments, Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle visited Prof. Julia Ernst's International Human Rights Advocacy class.

Justice Jon Jensen and Justice Lisa Fair McEvers spoke to the Lawyering Skills I class taught by Prof. Denitsa Mavrova Heinrich.

Justice Dan Crothers presented material to Prof. Margaret Moore Jackson's Evidence class.

Justice Jensen made a point to Prof. Heinrich's Trial Advocacy class.

Justice McEvers spoke to a law clerk information session.

The Court judged the moot court finals on Oct. 30.

Moot court contestants Katie Winbauer and Tatiana Hamilton represented the Appellant.

Martha Amdahl and Logan Caldwell argued for the Appellee in the finals.

The Court posed after the arguments with the moot court board, Ana Nykolayow, Liz Kriz, Abigale Griffin, Eric Koppy and Kelsey Stock.

Clerk of the Supreme Court Penny Miller was recognized by Dean Michael McGinniss on behalf of the law school for her many years of service to the Court and the law school.

On Oct. 31, the Court heard arguments in McDougall, et al. v. AgCountry Farm Credit Services, et al. Kip Kaler represented the McDougalls.

John Schroeder argued for the Appellee, AgCountry Farm Credit Services.

The second Oct. 31 argument was in State v. Job. Sam Gereszek represented Job.

Reid Brady argued on behalf of the state in the Job case.

Justice Tufte later visited Prof. Ernst's Legislation class.

Supreme Court in Wishek - The Oct. 15 photos

The Court heard arguments on Oct. 15 in case of City of West Fargo v. Ekstrom in the Wishek Public School gymnasium.

Retired High School Principal, Yvonne Engelhart, invited the Court to Wishek prior to her retirement.

Students in grades 9 - 12 talk with the justices about what to expect in the oral arguments. The justices also spoke with students in grades 7 and 8.

The justices ponder a question during their discussion about the North Dakota court system with students.

Attorney Luke Heck presented arguments on behalf of Appellant Mandie Le Ekstrom.

Attorney Stephen Hanson II presented arguments on behalf of Appellee City of West Fargo.

After the arguments, the justices presented a signed Court photograph to Superintendent Shawn Kuntz and Renae Bosch, the High School and Elementary School Principal.

Supreme Court travels to Edgeley

The Supreme Court made a visit to Edgeley on Wednesday, March 27, to hear arguments in a case and visit with students from kindergarten to high school.

Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle, Justice Lisa Fair McEvers, and Justice Dan Crothers talked to elementary school students in Edgeley about basics of the law.

Justice Jerod Tufte and Justice Jon Jensen told a group of elementary students about how the court system works.

After visiting with students, the Court heard arguments in State v. Odum. Mark Meyer presented on behalf of the Appellee, Perry Odum.

The Court listened to the arguments in Odum.

Casey Moen, Assistant Richland County State’s Attorney argued on behalf of the State who is the Appellant in this matter.

After the argument, the Court answered questions from seniors at Edgeley High School.

The Chief Justice took a question from an Edgeley senior.

Before concluding their visit, the Court presented a photo to Todd Kosel, High School Principal, and Melissa Entzi, Problems of Democracy and Spanish Teacher.

The Supreme Court at UND School of Law - The October 24-25, 2018 photos

During the Court's fall visit to the University of North Dakota School of Law, the schedule included oral arguments in four cases, classroom visits, judging the final internal moot court arguments, student lunch, breakfast sponsored by the Law Women's Caucus, visiting the Rural Practice Association, an informational session for students interested in applying for clerkships with the Court, and lunch with the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association.


	State v. Vollrath, Supreme Court No. 20180161, was the first case with Mark Friese presenting arguments on behalf of the Appellant.
	The State was represented by Britta Demello Rice in the Vollrathappeal.
	The Court listens to arguments in the Baker Courtroom at the UND School of Law.
	The second argument of the day was Schultz v. Schultz, Supreme Court No. 20180097, Tressie Brazil represented the Appellant.
	The Appellee in the Schultz appeal was represented by Steve Ottmar.
	Many students sat in on all of the arguments during the Court’s two-day visit.
	Chief Justice VandeWalle visits with students in the Gender & the Law course and discusses changes in the law.
	Justice McEvers provides information to potential law clerk applicants.
	Justice Jensen visits about using experts in litigation with Trial Advocacy students and students in the Forensic Psychology Graduate program.
	Justice Crothers teaches students in the Evidence class.
	Justice Tufte relates his experiences as an attorney in a small rural town with the students in the Rural Practice Association.
	On Wednesday evening the Justices heard moot court final arguments.
	The finalists Alex Carthew, Emily Ramage, Erica Skogen and Dustin Richard pose with the Court. Ms. Skogen was selected as best oralist by the Justices.
	The team of Emily Ramage and Alex Carthew won the overall competition.
	The Moot Court Board including Peter Aiello, Olivia Jureidini, Corey Haller, Montana Funk, Ian Duncan and Cole Johnston posed with the Court.
	Thursday morning started with argument in Tornabeni v. Wold, et al., Supreme Court No. 20180164, with Robert Lantz arguing on behalf of the Appellants.
	The Appellee, Tornabeni, was represented by John Fitzgerald.
	In the final case of the day, Matter of Kulink, Supreme Court No. 20180083, Tyler Morrow presented argument on behalf of the Appellant.
	The State was represented by Leah Viste in the Kulink appeal.
	The visit ended with lunch and a panel discussion with members of the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association.
	Bar Association members posed questions for the Court during the lunch visit.

N.D. Supreme Court in Devils Lake

	The Supreme Court traveled to Devils Lake High School Oct. 23 to meet with students and hear a case. Justice Lisa Fair McEvers and Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle teamed up to talk with students.
	Devils Lake High School Principal Ryan Hanson served as tour guide for the Devils Lake High school visit. Superintendent Scott Privratsky, who was instrumental for the Court's visit is not shown.
	Justices Dan Crothers, Jerod Tufte and Jon Jensen talked about the court system and answered student questions.
	Justices Crothers and McEvers enjoyed the give and take with students and teachers.
