North Dakota does not have an inactive status as far as licensing.  Either a lawyer is licensed or not licensed.

A lawyer choosing not to be licensed is encouraged to review Rule 8, Admission to Practice R., regarding the requirements for relicensure.

Under the CLE rules, a lawyer may select to be inactive to avoid CLE reporting.  Please visit the State Bar Association's website regarding inactive status for CLE purposes.

Should a lawyer decide not to renew their license, the attached form (Inactive Form) can be completed and e-mailed to the State Board of Law Examiners (barexaminers@ndcourts.gov) or mailed directly to the State Bar Association at the address reflected on their website.  The Board of Law Examiners will mark the attorney’s license status as voluntarily not licensed. The form will also be forwarded to SBAND for their CLE recording purposes.
