Ernst to give lecture on Mayflower Compact Feb. 27

Julia Ernst UND News Release

Julia Ernst, School of Law, will present the next Faculty Lecture, "The Mayflower Compact and the U.S. Constitution," at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Memorial Union Lecture Bowl. A reception will precede the lecture at 4 p.m.

The year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Compact, signed by the Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower anchored just offshore from the land that would become Plymouth Colony. This short and simple manuscript would become the historical precedent for future seminal documents in the formation of the American governmental system, including the U.S. Constitution. As the nation prepares to commemorate its quatercentennial, join us in exploring the influence the Mayflower Compact has had in the United States over the past four centuries.

Julia Ernst joined the UND School of Law in 2011. She teaches Constitutional Law, Legislation, International Human Rights, Gender and Law, and Professional Foundations. Her research explores constitutional law, human rights, and gender. She serves on the State Bar Association of North Dakota's Women Lawyers Section Executive Committee and is a member of Sharon Lutheran Church. Previously, she taught at Georgetown and served as executive director of a legal fellowship program.

Ernst served on the editorial board of Perspectives Magazine published by the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, vice-chair of the ABA's Women's Rights Committee, and on a U.S. State Department advisory commission. She also worked for a member of Congress and a public interest legal organization in DC, practiced environmental law in Detroit, and attended the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. She earned her LL.M. from Georgetown, J.D. and M.A. from University of Michigan, and B.A. from Yale.
