Summary of Work
The Commissioner administers the Department of Labor and Human Rights, which is
responsible for enforcing North Dakota’s wage and hour laws, discrimination laws, and
providing education and outreach to the public regarding these laws. The Commissioner
makes all final decisions on case matters and must interpret the laws and regulations
enforced by the Department.
The Commissioner is responsible for the administration of all aspects of the Department,
including leading and developing a qualified team, maintaining positive internal and external
relationships, preparing biannual budget proposals, drafting and administering policies and
procedures, as well as contributing to the Governor’s cabinet as a participant in cross-cutting
initiatives, and participating in legislative process as a representative of the executive branch
and expert in his/her field.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate possesses a law degree and is licensed to practice law, with eight or
more years of experience working with Human Resources and/or Labor & Employment law,
as well as five or more years of experience managing a team.
