David Gilbertson has been the South Dakota Supreme Court's chief justice for just shy of two decades, longer than anyone in the state's history.
During that time, he told The Daily Republic in Pierre recently, nearly every major issue facing the state's judicial system has changed, and he anticipates that change will continue for his successor after his retirement next year.
"I talked to my predecessor, Chief Justice Robert Miller, who was chief justice for 11 years before me," Gilbertson said. "The issues that he faced, some are the same that I've faced — successful management of the court system; making sure cases get decided promptly. Then, there is this whole new dynamic ... I'm not so naive to think that my successor is not going to see things I wouldn't dream of."
