U.S. Supreme Court opinions: June 29 Thursday, June 29, 2023

The United States Supreme Court has issued three new opinions.

In Groff v. DeJoy the court held that Title VII requires an employer that denies a religious accommodation to show that the burden of granting an accommodation would result in substantial increased costs in relation to the conduct of its particular business.

In Abitron Austria GmbH v. Hetronic Int’l, Inc. the court held that applying the presumption against extraterritoriality, two provisions of the Lanham Act that prohibit trademark infringement—15 U. S. C. §1114(1)(a) and §1125(a)(1)—are not extraterritorial and extend only to claims where the infringing “use in commerce” is domestic.

In Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College the court held that the admissions programs at Harvard College and the University of North Carolina violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
