The Legal Advisory Unit serves as a support unit to the Department and is delegated the authority and responsibility for providing general legal counsel and policy analysis to the Department; processing administrative appeals; assisting, planning, and developing administrative rules; implementing administrative rules and program policy; drafting proposed legislation; assisting with estate recoveries; and acting as the Department's Civil Rights Office. Upon request, the Legal Advisory Unit provides information to the public regarding programs and services. As necessary, it consults with the Office of Attorney General. The Legal Advisory Unit is responsible for administering its budget as well as the budgets for litigation expenses, and payments to the Office of Attorney General and the Office of Administrative Hearings.
