UND School of Law graduate Robert “Bob” LeRoy Alderman died Nov. 16. A native of Casselton, he was admitted to the North Dakota bar in 1953 and spent most of his adult life in Spencer, Iowa. -

Raymond Cross 1948-2023
Attorney Raymond Cross died Jan. 24 at his home in Tucson, Ariz. Born in Elbowoods on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, he graduated from Yale Law School in 1973. In the 1980s, he represented the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in its lawsuit over the taking of tribal land for Garrison Dam. -

Chief Justice VandeWalle celebrates 85th birthday, 40 years on court
Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle celebrated his 85th birthday and 40 years of service on the Supreme Court on Aug. 15. VandeWalle was appointed to the Court in 1978 by Governor Arthur Link to fill the unexpired term of Justice Robert Vogel, who resigned. He has served longer than any other North Dakota Supreme Court justice. -

Donald R. Holloway 1936-2019
Donald R. Holloway, 82, died June 2. After earning a law degree at the UND School of Law, he was North Dakota Securities Commissioner from 1968 to 1976, practiced law in Bismarck from 1976 to 1990, and was an Administrative Law Judge until 2007. His funeral is at 10 a.m. on June 6 at Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo. -

Order Extending Rule 8.5
On March 11, 1998, the Honorable Bruce E. Bohlman, Judge of the District Court for the Northeast Central Judicial District, petitioned the Court for an extension of the term limit of Rule 8.5, North Dakota Rules of Court (NDROC), for an additional 18 months. Rule 8.5, NDROC, is scheduled to terminate on April 1, 1998. On March 23, 1998, the Honorable Robert W. Former North Dakota State Court Administrator Bill Bohn died August 24 , 2024. He was appointed to serve as the administrator for the North Dakota Judicial Branch in July 1975. He was the second individual to hold that position and served until his resignation in December 1992. -

I am pleased to be here today to report on the State of the North Dakota Judiciary. I know your time is limited, so I will move right into my remarks. -
State of the Judiciary Report 2011
I am pleased to offer the State of the Judiciary Report to the 112th Annual Meeting of the State Bar Association. Despite what some of the younger lawyers may believe, I have not been in attendance at all 112 meetings. A few people in this room were in attendance at the same meeting I was a few weeks ago in which the speaker, a retired Law School Dean, in talking about his age said that "With age comes wisdom but sometimes age comes alone." -

As I have stated in past presentations, change is ever present and it seems almost all consuming. In a quotation by E. B. White, he said, "The only sense that is common in the long run, is the sense of change - and we all instinctively avoid it." -

I am pleased to again be given the opportunity to appear before you and present the message on the State of the Judiciary. One of the Chief Justices from another State who does not currently have this privilege asked me if I thought it was worthwhile. I told him I thought it was but he really should ask the legislators who sit and listen what they thought. -
